A Whole Lot of Writin’ Going On

LA Writers Center

I recently joined the LA Writers’ Center, which is under the leadership of powerhouse dramaturge/diva, Che’Rae Adams. Info about Adams may be found here.

The Center offers writing workshops and readings to writers who are interested in developing their work. The organization is designed to germinate and foster new works by involving not only the writer, but a team of artists: directors, dramaturges, and actors. I’ve taken two of their writing workshops and have found them to be the extremely helpful, and encouraging. The workshop has provided fertile ground for several successful productions. And, Adams has directed and dramaturged several productions, most notably Pandora’s Trunk starring Kim Fields and Indira Gibson, which was presented at the 2003 and 2005 National Black Theatre Festivals; Portrait of a Poet by Yrneh Brown, which was recently produced at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood, and several other productions, too numerous to list on this blog. Current class info is available here.Elieen O’Connell and Mark Ewing

In addition, the Center hosts a series of staged readings called the New Alignment Reading Series with the Syzygy Theatre Group. I have participated in several of them as a reader. The readings are held at Sidewalk Studios at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre (4150 Riverside Drive, Suite D Burbank), a charming little spot next to Priscilla’s Coffee Shop, and around the corner from Warner Brothers Studios. Interested in checking out their free staged readings of new works? More info follows:

For more details, visit the LA Writers’ Center here. It’s a welcoming and active community of artists. They’ve got a lot going on, and there are opportunities to collaborate with its members. Think of it as a way to expand the mission of the Film Co-Op—artists joining forces and resources.
