MISSION & OBJECTIVE
Silver Lake Film Festival began in 2000 to address the lack of opportunity for independent filmmakers in Los Angeles. Although it has grown into an international event, SLFF stays true to their grassroots origins and their commitment to indie film; they continue to have a hipster vibe and proudly embrace filmmaking defined by personal vision, rather than by committee.

ABOUT THE EVENT
Silver Lake Film Festival 2006 screened over 200 independent films and hosted the Los Angeles premiere of David Mamet’s new dark comedy EDMOND, starring William H. Macy, Julia Stiles, Joe Montegna and Bai Ling. SLFF also celebrated the uber independence of the year’s honorees — pioneering filmmaker Rob Nilsson, actor/writer/director Julie Delpy and iconoclastic artist Bad Otis Link. Audiences were treated to Q&As with celebrity guest curators k.d. lang, wild man Bobcat Goldthwait and John Doe of the legendary band X; as well as the debut of the festival within a festival, MP4Fest, highlighting new digital cinematic art forms. And as usual, SLFF presented dozens of cutting-edge art, music, and other entertainment events and parties, parties, parties.

SLFF uses multiple venues along Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Los Angeles, including the ArcLight Cinemas (LA’s premier multiplex), the historic Vista Theatre, and other theater venues, galleries, and leading alternative nightclubs (for MusicFest, the music component of our festival.)

The Margaret Mead Traveling Festival is now available for booking

This year, program themes include worker rights in China, Mexican-American migration, the evolution debate, and more.

As you may know, the annual Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival is the longest-running, premiere showcase for international non-fiction media in the United States. The Festival features a broad spectrum of cultural documentary, both in form and subject matter. Each year the Traveling Festival brings highlights from the Mead Festival to sites throughout the United States and abroad (museums, community and film centers, universities and colleges, festivals, public libraries, and more), providing access to innovative work from around the world.

The Traveling Festival is comprised of six thematic programs, each program approximately between 1.5 and 2 hrs, depending on length of films. Venues have the option of renting a full package (six programs, $1800) or a half-package (three programs, $900); this includes background and promotional information on titles, still images, preview videos for publicity purposes, and a guide for conducting film festivals and screenings. The presentation format is in video, in either VHS or DVD. The Traveling Festival can be rented for a weekend marathon or for up to six weeks.

Changing Stripes: Forest Whitaker is Idi Amin

Forest
Elvis Mitchell interviews the teddy bear chameleon actor/director about his career, and his powerful portrayal of Idi Amin here. If you haven’t seen The Last King of Scotland yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. Whitaker gives a frighteningly accurate performance of the Janus-faced African dictator in this film.

A Whole Lot of Writin’ Going On

LA Writers Center

I recently joined the LA Writers’ Center, which is under the leadership of powerhouse dramaturge/diva, Che’Rae Adams. Info about Adams may be found here.

The Center offers writing workshops and readings to writers who are interested in developing their work. The organization is designed to germinate and foster new works by involving not only the writer, but a team of artists: directors, dramaturges, and actors. I’ve taken two of their writing workshops and have found them to be the extremely helpful, and encouraging. The workshop has provided fertile ground for several successful productions. And, Adams has directed and dramaturged several productions, most notably Pandora’s Trunk starring Kim Fields and Indira Gibson, which was presented at the 2003 and 2005 National Black Theatre Festivals; Portrait of a Poet by Yrneh Brown, which was recently produced at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood, and several other productions, too numerous to list on this blog. Current class info is available here.Elieen O’Connell and Mark Ewing

In addition, the Center hosts a series of staged readings called the New Alignment Reading Series with the Syzygy Theatre Group. I have participated in several of them as a reader. The readings are held at Sidewalk Studios at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre (4150 Riverside Drive, Suite D Burbank), a charming little spot next to Priscilla’s Coffee Shop, and around the corner from Warner Brothers Studios. Interested in checking out their free staged readings of new works? More info follows:

For more details, visit the LA Writers’ Center here. It’s a welcoming and active community of artists. They’ve got a lot going on, and there are opportunities to collaborate with its members. Think of it as a way to expand the mission of the Film Co-Op—artists joining forces and resources.

STUDIO BEHIND WILL SMITH FILM LAUNCHES CONTEST: Columbia offering internships to winners of `Pursuit of Happyness’ competition.

http://www.eurweb.com/story.cfm?id=29278

*Columbia Pictures is partnering with eight of the world’s leading companies to offer “The Pursuit of Happyness ‘Pursue It’ The Ultimate Internship Contest,” in which contestants will compete for dream internships at Gap Inc., The Hollywood Reporter, Morgan Stanley, NBC, the National Football League (NFL), PEOPLE Magazine, PlayStation and Yahoo!

In addition to the internship position, each winner also will win a trip to the Hollywood premiere of the studio’s upcoming drama “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith, Thandie Newton and Smith’s son Jaden Christopher Syre Smith. Winners will have the opportunity to meet Smith and enjoy the evening with the film’s cast.

Based on a true story, “The Pursuit of Happyness” stars Will Smith as Chris Gardner, a marginally employed salesman who finds himself with nowhere to go after he and his five-year-old son (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) are evicted from their San Francisco apartment. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious brokerage firm, he and his son endure numerous hardships as he struggles to create a better life for the two of them.”

“Chris Gardner, the person I portray in ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ is a bright, talented guy who’s barely making ends meet until he gets an internship that enables him to pursue his dreams,” said star and producer Will Smith.

Steve Tisch, one of the film’s producers and a co-owner of the NFL’s New York Giants football team added: “America is the land of opportunity, but to succeed in the corporate world everyone needs that first break, that foot in the door. The winners of this contest will get a unique chance both to learn about how great companies work and to demonstrate their own creativity, energy and determination.”

Through October 30, 2006 contestants can visit the contest Web site www.sony.com/Pursue-It and choose the company at which they would like to intern. As part of the online application process, entrants will need to create a video of themselves, in which they share, in five minutes or less, their own personal motto or “words to live by” giving examples of how this philosophy makes them uniquely qualified to work at the company they have chosen.

For more information, along with complete contest rules, visit http://filmcoop.wordpress.com/wp-admin/www.sony.com/Pursue-It. The film opens nationwide on Dec. 15.
